It’s that time of the year again: Hollywood’s biggest night! The day we all sit by our televisions, medicine or the internet as might be the case for some, and anxiously await news on who has won what, and be reminded of all the movies we should have seen, but didn’t.

I don’t know about you, but on this day where we’re finally allowed to let go of the movies of last year, I’m more than ready to take a broad look at the movies waiting for us this year. Most of them won’t get any award recognition, but there should be something that perks your interest. Let me know what you think and any suggestions for movies I might have missed. Also, don’t forget to check out my Television in 2011, too.

Winter
I Am Number Four
Feb 18
John is an alien teen, masking his true identity and passing as a high school student to hide from a deadly enemy. No idea if this movie would be any good, but it at least looked entertaining and pretty. For the record, fun teen action movies should be everybody’s weakness. Then, there’s also the bonus of seeing newcomer Alex Pettyfer in his first two big movies this year. And Dianna Agron finally gets herself noticed outside of Glee. See, everybody wins.
Spring
The Adjustment Bureau
March 4
A man glimpses the future Fate has planned for him and realizes he wants something else. To get it, he must pursue the only woman he’s ever loved across New York. Movie based on a Phillip K. Dick story? Yes, please. Matt Damon in a movie? Also, good. The Observers from Fringe out for payback? That part is priceless.
Beastly
march 4
A student casts a spell that transforms her vain classmate into everything he despises. The only solution to the curse is to find someone that will love him as he is. There’s a reason the story of beauty and beast keeps getting retold. Still, considering how long it’s taken for this movie to come out, chances are it probably won’t be that good. Again, it’s Alex Pettyfer. Vanessa Hudgens, Neil Patrick Harris, and Mary-Kate Olsen also star.
Red Riding Hood
march 11
Catherine Hardwicke directs a dark retelling of the classic “Little Red Riding Hood”. Seyfried plays Valerie, a beautiful young woman torn between two men. The pretty! I’m already a fan of Catherine Hardwicke’s indie style and directing work both in Thirteen and Twilight, so I’m pretty much following to her next movie. There’s also the fact I seem to have a soft spot for Amanda Seyfried. (I even met her on the set of Dear John!)
Sucker Punch
march 25
A young girl’s dream world provides an escape from her darker reality. Unrestrained by boundaries, she is free to go where her mind takes her. So pretty, so awesome, and so epic. There’s nothing better than strong kick-ass female character. Director Zack Snyder is the king of pretty and extravagent. Starring Emily Browning, Jena Malone, Vanessa Hudgens, Jamie Chung, and Abbie Cornish.
Source Code
april 1
When soldier Captain Colter Stevens wakes up in the body of an unknown man, he discovers he’s part of a mission to find the bomber of a Chicago commuter train. I’ve already read the script for this one, so I know the story is unique and awesome. All I can hope for now is the movie does it justice, because the first trailer really didn’t.
Hanna
april 8
Raised by her father, an ex-CIA man, in the wilds of Finland, Hanna’s upbringing and training have been one and the same, all geared to making her the perfect assassin. I’m excited to see Saoirse Ronan in a lead action role, Joe Wright directing something different than his usual period pieces, and The Chemical Brothers doing the score. The premise also looks intriguing, and you just know there’ll be some kind of big twist into the mystery of Hanna.
Water for Elephants
april 22
Veterinary school student Jacob meets and falls in love with Marlena, a star performer in a circus of a bygone era. I haven’t really been as excited for this movie as his last movie Remember Me, but I’m still interested in seeing it because of Christoph Waltz, Reese Witherspoon, and Robert Pattinson. I do think the recent trailer is much better, however, and shows what I’m sure is going to be a moving and emotional film.
Scream 4
april 15
Sidney has put her life back together over the course of 10 years. Unfortunately, her book tour brings her back to Woodsboro, home of the Ghostface serial killer murders. Scream is that classic horror movie that has spawned endless sequels, but I’m excited that Kevin Williamson (Scream, Scream 2) is back for this one. I still remember when he was writing and tweeting about it last year. There’s also all the exciting new stars and guest stars making it feel like a who’s who of young Hollywood. This one is not to be missed.
Thor
may 6
Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior, is sent down to Earth as punishment for reigniting a reckless war. What can I say? I’m a sucker for superheroes. I’ll see them all as long as they don’t look completely and utterly ridiculous. This one may be bordering that line, but my soft spot for the Hemsworth brothers overpowers that. Plus, Natalie Portman is in this movie, so it can’t be completely horrible, right?
The Tree of Life
may 27
The impressionistic story of a family in the 1950s chronicling the journey of the eldest son, Jack through life and trying to reconcile the complicated relationship with his father. This is a case of trailer makes the movie. I had never heard of this film before, and thus had no interest upon entering the theater, and left a believer. I don’t know what the movie is about or if it’ll be any good, but the trailer made quite an impression on me.
Summer
X-Men: First Class
june 3
So, speaking of superheroes…X-Men are my favorite. I’m so glad that after the failure that was the last series, we get another go at it with this movie. It already looks so much better. I like the tone of the trailer, the music, and the fact it seems to be based around real historical events. I think people are tired of silly action-based superhero movies of yesterday, and now we’re ready to get down and dirty instead. I know I am.
Super 8
june 10
Set in 1979 after the U.S. Air Force closed a section of AREA 51, ‘Super 8? involves the arrival of an undocumented species captured on film by some kids. No one really knows what this movie is exactly about, but all we really need to know is J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg have joined forces. There’s also the added bonus that Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights) and Elle Fanning are in it, too. I’m sold.
Green Lantern
june 17
When the Green Lantern assigned to this sector finds himself dying, the ring is given to successor Hal Jordan who finds himself with a new job he never expected. Again, superheroes. Now this one doesn’t look as good, but it does have writer Greg Berlanti (Everwood, Jack&Bobby) working for it. At the least, onscreen pairing Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively should be interesting.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, part 2
july 15
In Part 2 of the epic finale, the battle for the Wizarding world escalates as Harry, Ron, and Hermione go back to Hogwarts to find and destroy Voldemort’s final horcruxes. Harry Potter. The end. Do I really need to say more? I’m of the opinion that each movie just gets better and better, and this one will be a magnificent ending the book series of our generation.
Captain America
july 22
After being deemed unfit for military service, Steve Rogers volunteers for a top secret research project that turns him into Captain America. I’m not as excited to see this superhero movie as all the rest, but it should be interesting to see Chris Evans go from Flaming Torch to Captain America.
Fall
Now
oct 28
In the not-too-distant future the aging gene has been switched off. Time has become the currency, the way people pay for luxuries and necessities. Finally, another movie from director Andrew Niccol after one of my favorite movies, Gattaca. I love him for his unique concepts and his beautiful directing style. There’s also the casts including: Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried, Cillian Muphy, Alex Pettyfer, Olivia Wilde, Matthew Bomer, Johnny Galecki, and Vincent Kartheiser.
Contagion
oct 21
The worldwide medical community race to find a cure to a lethal airborne virus that kills within days. One word: Soderbergh. Some more words: Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law and Kate Winslet. This is going to be so good.
Twilight: Breaking Dawn
nov 18
The epic love story between Bella Swan and Edward Cullen concludes in the final installments of Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling series. It’s the beginning of the end in this part one of the two part conclusion to last book in the Twilight series. The book itself has divided the fanbase in half because of it’s strange story and feel, but maybe it’ll make a better movie than book? I have faith that Bill Condon (Pleasantville) won’t listen us down.
Happy Feet 2
nov 18
We return to the magnificent landscape of Antarctica, reuniting us with the world’s most famous tap-dancing penguin, Mumble and the love of his life Gloria. I think most people didn’t realize they were making another one, but since I loved the first one so much, I’m here to tell you. Now if only they can make this one more cute and music, and less bash you over the head propaganda.
Winter
Sherlock Holmes 2
dec 16
In the sequel, Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick Dr. Watson join forces to outwit and bring down their fiercest adversary, Professor Moriarty. I know a lot of people loved the first one, but I’m not one of those people. My love for Sherlock Holmes as a character just allows me to hope this one will be better.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
dec 21
The uncle of a missing woman, employs a disgraced financial journalist and a tattooed computer hacker to investigate. This book series is all the rage right now, and if you haven’t seen the original Swedish film, then what are you waiting for? Noomi Rapace will forever be my Lisbeth, but maybe Rooney Mara can convince me? At the least, I expect Fincher to do an awesome job with this one.
Tintin
dec 23
A young reporter named Tintin and his dog, a terrier named Snowy travel the world and set off on countless adventures. It’s about time Steven Spielberg is back in theaters. It has been way too long. Starring: Jamie Bell, Andy Serkis, Daniel Craig, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Toby Jones, Gad Elmaleh, Mackenzie Crook, Cary Elwes, Tony Curran, Sebastian Roché.
War Horse
dec 28
‘War Horse’ recounts the friendship between a boy and a horse, who are separated and whose fates continue to intertwine over the backdrop of World War I. Again, Steven Spielberg. He must has been in production for so long, and now all his movies are coming out at once. You don’t have to remind me that Benedict Cumberbatch of Sherlock fame will have a part in this one, too.

Comments

From that list I am looking forward to Hanna, Water for Elephants, Thor, Super 8 (whatever it is), Sherlock Holmes 2… and as a dark horse…Your Highness. Looks delightfully awful.

Not sure what to think about Girl with a Dragon Tattoo since I was more than fine with the original film. I suppose when I see trailers I can tell what the different “look” will be. I suppose the screenplay on this one will be the most exciting bit.

Interesting. I’m curious why those ones? Your Highness I think is a Universal movie. No good can come of that.

I’m the same way about Dragon Tattoo. I guess we’ll see…

Hanna is an original story and possibly some good female characterization. I tend to support both of those things when I have the chance. I read Water For Elephants while in that book club from last year and it was probably my favorite of the chick lit books we read. I thought it had a very realistic representation of an old person. See how it handles that in the movie. Thor looks like it could be as fun as Iron Man as long as it doesn’t take itself too seriously. The guy playing Thor used to be on an Australian kids drama about horses that I used to like. And he played Kirk’s Dad. Super 8 is an Abrams project and I’m to Abrams as you are to Joss. Your Highness…it very well maybe be the type of terrible that doesn’t swing back into terribly awesome. I grew up on Princess Bride and Army of Darkness and I am hoping it is at least the redheaded stepchild of that.

Very interesting. Thanks for taking the time to list out why you’re interested in each. I find it very fascinating as to people’s reasonings. I like Chris Hemsworth, too. ;) And I like all the J’s are talented: Joss Whedon, Josh Schwartz, Jason Katims, JJ Abrams. I just prefer Joss. I liked Alias and Star Trek, but I think Undercovers left a lot to be desired. Felicity I only saw a little bit and was ok. Fringe I like, but don’t love, and it took a while to find its footing.

I’ve been seeing commercials for the first 4 but most of the others are new to me. Funny enough I have seen Sucker Punch too but never saw the title of the movie and thought it was an ad for a video game.

Is there an accent that Saoirse can’t do? Can’t wait to see anything she does. I’m really not sure how Breaking Dawn is going to work as a movie but I guess we’ll see. A few fun things but nothing that I am dying to see, except for HP of course! :)

lol, that’s funny. I’ve been waiting for Sucker Punch for months now. I guess I’m more in tune with movie updates, etc.

I’ve only seen Saoirse in Atonement, so I’m not familiar with her work. And you have to get excited about something otherwise life is boring. ;)
