Comic-Con, Day Three: Secret Circle, Fringe, Joss Whedon, Snow White, and more!

Comic-Con is now coming to close with only one day left, but in a lot of ways Saturday was the most exciting day of the long event. Fan favorites such as The Vampire Diaries, Fringe, Community, Chuck, Nikita, and Being Human, as well as new shows like The Secret Circle, Grimm, and Terra Nova took center stage as fans waited in some of the longest lines, yet.

And in movies, Snow White and the Huntsmen, Knights of Badassdom, Immortals, and Twixt, had their own share of the Comic-Con action. Plus, the premiere of Universal’s Cowboys & Aliens.

Television, Day Three

The stars of Syfy’s reboot of the U.K. series Being Human were at Comic-Con on Saturday to premiere the trailer for the second season of their hit show, which is due to come back in January. I only saw the first few episodes of season one myself, but if the trailer is any indication, then I’m in for an exciting ride when I catch up.

And Friday, I posted some exciting news about what and who will be coming up on Syfy’s newest hit series, Alphas. Well today, I have the trailer that was played during the show’s panel.

After the success of Vampire Diaries, it’s not surprising everyone is waiting to see Kevin Williamson’s next series, the witchy Secret Circle. Williamson gave out a few more details Saturday about what we can expect from the new show. Though Williamson admits Secret Circle won’t be as in your face violent as its vampire counterpart, he agrees that the creepy factor of being able to kill someone on sight pretty much levels the playing field. He also divulged that Secret Circle will actually follow three generations of witches in Chance Harbor, Washington. This should make for a richer mythologay and complex world for the characters to play in. Also, a gorgeous new poster was just released, and it’s definitely the best one, yet.

The live-action movie for Avatar: The Last Airbender was met with a lot of criticism last year, but fans of the animated show proved they’re just as passionate as ever by overfilling their panel at Comic-Con. The eager fans were there to learn about Avatar: The Legend of Korra, the upcoming sequel to the popular original series. So, if you missed the original Avatar cartoon, or you’re a fan, then you’re going to want to listen up. The new series is set 70 years after the original and stars a 16-17 year old girl named Korra. And while the animation and art direction are as gorgeous as ever, the tone will actually be darker and more serious in this one. You can learn more, check out some artwork, and watch a trailer at UGO.

The premiere for FOX’s new dinosaur series Terra Nova has been a year in the making. Yet, press who watched the first hour on Saturday say it’s still not complete. Word is the first two-hour episode has some interesting ideas, but the expensive dinosaurs that have prolonged its premiere look like they came out of Jurassic Park from 20 years ago. However, the producers were quick to say they have the technology down now, and the dinosaurs “will continue to get better.”

Meanwhile, FOX’s other show Fringe remained tightly mum on what fans can expect from a fourth season of the show now that Peter doesn’t exist. The producers did at least share a gag video of various actors auditioning for the part of Peter. However, Pinkner did let juicy tidbit out: We may not have seen all of Olivia’s powers, yet.

Similarly, Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec were also being rather quiet on what we can expect from season 3 of Vampire Diaries. What we do know: The premiere episode will take place two months after the finale and Stefan will no longer be in Mystic Falls. This season will be all about whether Elena can love both Stefan and Damon, as well as what’s the deal with the Immortals. And best of all, Elijah will be back!

Steven S. Deknight was on hand Saturday to premiere the first teaser for Spartacus season 2. Delayed and then recast to Liam McIntyre because of original star Andy Whitfield’s illness, Spartacus: Vengeance looks to finally be back on track for a January 2012 release. I wasn’t a big fan of the first season, but I’m excited that Dollhouse‘ best writers, Jed and Maurissa Whedon, are on staff for season 2.

“I’m not big on regret. It’s not on my schedule.” Joss Whedon did Q&A for his own panel on Saturday where he discussed possibly writing a gay male character in the future, scaling Buffy back down from season 8, and what characters from Buffy and Angel will we see in season 9.

Movies, Day Three

Relativity Media’s version of Snow White may have gotten a head start by releasing their first image on Friday, but Universal is the one making a lasting impression judging by the four new banners depicting a darker version of the classic story. Starring Kristen Stewart, this won’t be your typical sing-with-the-birds Snow White.

Directed by Joe Lynch, scored by Battlestar Galctica‘s Bear McCreary, and starring Peter Dinklage, Summer Glau, and Ryan Kwanten, the trailer for Knights of Badassdom was unveiled yesterday at Comic-Con.
