Review: Sword of Omens, give me sight beyond sight.

Everything I wanted last week from Thundercats for this episode, I got it tonight. Panthro joined in on the action, and there was more teamwork. Lion-O finally used the sword to call the Thundercats. And there was some surprising mythology along with the reappearance of Mumm-Ra.

In “Journey to the Tower of Omens” Lion-O and the team are hot on the trail for the Book of Omens. I didn’t think all of this would happen so soon. This episode was like an epic midseason finale.

Thundercats (s01e06): Journey to the Tower of Omens

Congratulations Lion-O, this week you finally achieved Level 10. After weeks of having to prove himself to the Thundercats and then Panthro, Lion-O finally found the most important thing, belief in himself. It’s no wonder he couldn’t get the sword to listen, when he just didn’t have the power inside to make it work.

I thought we’d seen the last of flashbacks for a while after last’s week flashback heavy episode, but I was wrong. These flashbacks were a lot more welcome though, since they tied better into the episode’s story and gave us more questions than answers. Like was that Claudus and someone who looks like Tygra that helped Mumm-Ra way back when to get the original Stone of Omens?

Turns out Mumm-Ra’s not as feeble as we all thought. All he needs is a little chanting, and he’ll be good as new. Scary even. The look on Snarf’s face after he transformed was priceless. I also loved that we got to see each of the Thundercats use their powers to get into the Tower of Omens and get to the Book of Omens first. Now that’s what I call teamwork.

I knew it was too good to be true that getting the Book of Omens would mean they’d won in some way. Of course, the book turned out to be blank. Now Jaga is dead and what are they going to do next?

Notes:

I see the Tygra and Lion-O both liking Cheetara is still alive. Sometimes I’m amazed by what this show gets by in the subtext. Cheetara whispering in Lion-O’s ear and then him saying, “Were were just trying to get my sword to work.” Really, show? Tygra watching Cheetara speed up the tower with his mouth hanging open was pretty amusing, too.
