Review: They say vengeance taken will tear the heart and torment the conscience.
I’m sure Emily Thorne never thought it would be easy, and she didn’t expect to exact some Revenge without breaking a few eggs, but this week all her plans are going to hell in a basket thanks to a few people who are very unhappy to have her meddling in their affairs.
It’s Fourth of July, because this show loves its celebrations just as much as Vampire Diaries, and there’s a lot of explosive tension in the air. Can you believe no one is revenged this week? Instead, we’re in for some very “Intrigue”-ing storylines. (more…)
Review: I’ve lost too much already… I don’t want to lose you, too.
Ever since Ringer began, it’s been a little hard to pinpoint exactly what genre it should fall in. Mystery, noir, thriller? It’s a little bit of all those things, but lately I’ve been thinking it should just go ahead and embrace its inner soap opera.
I don’t know if it’s because there hasn’t been a new episode in two weeks, but “Oh Gawd, There’s Two of Them?” felt even more out there than usual. The show continues to be so entrancing you can’t turn away, yet so ridiculous you can’t help but be amused. (more…)
Review: If I told you that, I’d have to kill you.
When other shows do a Halloween episode, it’s usually just a standalone episode designed to be festive and fun. But when Pretty Little Liars does a Halloween episode, it not only manages to do both those things but also be an exciting mystery-driven prequel.
“The First Secret” takes us way back to before Alison died, before anyone started receiving those creepy text messages from A, and before there was even a mystery for any of them to solve. Or does it? Happy Halloween, Liars! (more…)
Review: But now I’m back, and all those things that kept me going, they’re gone.
We’re now a quarter of the way into the first season of Homeland, and the characters are beginning to open up in unexpected ways. It’s clear now that Brody, if he’s at all a potential terrorist, is only one piece of an even greater puzzle.
Carrie and Brody take a step back though this week to let the world around them begin to develop. In “Clean Skin” Carrie’s informant Lynne closes in on Abu Nazir, while Brody’s daughter Dana decides whether to come clean during the family’s interview on national television. (more…)
Review: You have no soul. How the hell did you get like this?
In the series premiere of Once Upon a Time, we were introduced to a fairytale land that was about to be turned upside down by the Evil Queen’s curse. But many viewers felt the show was too lighthearted to later deal with its potentially dark subject matter.
Hopefully after “The Thing You Love Most” some of those criticisms can be put to rest. Because as we see in this episode, where we learn what motivates the Evil Queen, in order to reap the benefits of an evil curse, you must be able to do an evil deed in return. (more…)
Review: Believing in even the possibility of a happy ending is a very powerful thing.
Over the past year we’ve seen a rise in the number of fantasy stories that are being greenlit for the big and small screen. Now more than ever, people are looking to be swept away from our reality and into a fairytale land like the one in Once Upon a Time.
The problem with fantasy is it’s hard to find the line between fun and whimsical and still be serious and compelling. Overall, I think the “Pilot” did a good job of maintaining that balance, but I’ll hold out opinion on the series until I can see where it goes from here. (more…)
