Review: Willows are weak, but they bind other wood.

It’s funny how many different times this show can put Lion-O to the test while still making each one unique. That’s not to say this episode was bad, but until he gets over himself, I guess we’re going to have to endure this plotline again and again.

In “The Duelist and the Drifter,” Lion-O goes out for supplies and trades in the Sword of Omens for some magic beans. Okay, not really. He loses it to a sword duelist and collector in battle. And all this happens without the other Thundercats again, mind you. (more…)

Review: I never thought the past would look so much like the future.

It’s the oldest trick in the book to answer the questions of the present by flashing back to the past. So while we may have already gotten a taste of the past in last week’s Thundercats, this week Lion-O’s transported into the body of his ancestor Leo to see for himself just how the war with Mumm-Ra began.

And after weeks of the other Thundercats, Panthro, and even Lion-O thinking he’s not worthy to be king, in “Legacy” it’s finally the Book of Omens turn to put him to the test. Poor kid, when will everyone let up?

Review: Sword of Omens, give me sight beyond sight.

Everything I wanted last week from Thundercats for this episode, I got it tonight. Panthro joined in on the action, and there was more teamwork. Lion-O finally used the sword to call the Thundercats. And there was some surprising mythology along with the reappearance of Mumm-Ra.

In “Journey to the Tower of Omens” Lion-O and the team are hot on the trail for the Book of Omens. I didn’t think all of this would happen so soon. This episode was like an epic midseason finale. (more…)

Review: I served him proudly, and you can expect the same.

Last week’s Thundercats was quite an emotional episode that ended with the surprising return of Panthro. So, of course, it was going to be hard for this week to top it.

“Old Friends” takes the heat off Lion-O and finding the Book of Omens to focus on someone else. Make way for Panthro. He’s older, wiser, and not so sure he want to take orders from a teenager. Looks like Lion-O’s going to need to prove himself again this week. (more…)

Review: You have been given the gift of life.

This week’s Thundercats resonated on so many levels. It was equal parts cute and emotionally moving, and I had to hold back tears by the end. It’s really a testament to the show that they can introduce a character and make you feel for him in just one episode. I’m also loving how the morality tales each week mirror back to the team’s own journey.

In “Song of the Petalars,” the Thundercats are on the run from an army of lizards when they come face to face with a tiny race of plant people called the Petalars. (more…)

Review: Isn’t it the crew we’re fighting for?

The second episode of a new series is never as good as the premiere, and this week’s Thundercats episode is no exception.

In the third episode, “Ramlak Rising,” the quest to find the Book of Omens is put on hold as Lion-O decides to instead avenge his father. After trying to cross the Sea of Sand, the team encounter the Fishmen, also interested in revenge and in search of a giant plant creature who drank their oasis home. (more…)
