Review: Does a shoe sale at Bergdorfs constitute an emergency?

I’m as surprised as you, but I was actually entertained by this week’s episode of Ringer. Well, as much as you can be for what’s turning out to be such a ridiculous but fun 80’s soap opera. Come on, admit it, the only reason any of us are still watching is for the actors. We might as well enjoy it while we still can.

“She’s Ruining Everything” took the show to a whole different genre than the pilot and proved once again the writers have no idea where this is going. At this point, I’m thinking they’ll keep giving us standalone episodes while holding out on the bigger mysteries just to keep the season going.

This week’s episode was all about the Case of the Disappearing Body. Now you see it, now you don’t. If you kill someone in self defense, what would you do? Call the police? Get out of town? Nope, you’d call your AA sponsor and leave a message about how you killed a man. It’s a good thing his voicemail gives you the ability to then delete said message…

And then what would you wear to clean up blood and get rid of the body? Your white and frilly Sunday best, of course. Really, Siobhan? There was also a moment where Bridget came in packing bleach and eyed the rotating saw where I thought things were about to get really interesting as she disposed of the body. However, it was sadly a false alarm.

Let’s not forget the soap part of soap opera though. I started off watching this show with being more into Bridget and Henry, but now I think I’m more interested in seeing Andrew reconcile with Bridget. The show has changed my mind. That’s something, I guess. Serious question: Why would you even cheat on that husband anyway? He’s sweet, has an accent, and is not bad to look at. Not that the lover is any worse… By the way, does Malcolm now make three love interests for Bridget?

I also somewhat enjoyed the scenes between Bridget and her stepdaughter Juliet. (That also may have had something to do with them using one of my all-time favorite songs, Lifehouse’s ‘Everything’.) I found it interesting that Bridget feeling needed by Andrew and Juliet would get her to stop from skipping town. Just like The Lying Game, this show is going to end up being another example of ‘everyone likes my twin better than me.’

Lastly, there’s the cliffhangers. Siobhan is not happy Bridget is off living her life and taking all the money out of her savings account. Guess this wasn’t part of the plan, huh? And what happened to the dead body? Did the creepy guy from the party cover it up for her?

I’m just really sad about Ringer because everyone wants it to be really great, but it just can’t seem to get its act together. If they could just get rid of all the plot contrivances, they’d at least be one step closer to making the show better. And please get rid of the flashbacks unless they’re being properly used to tell us something and not just show us.

Ringer is not a good show by any means, but at least it kept my attention this week. I’ll keep watching for now. What did you guys think?

Next week:

Dead guy’s phone is going a ring a ding ding, but who’s on the other end? Bridget, private investigator, is going to find out.
